A Nation Builder beyond words

Action speaks louder than words.

A nation is not defined by its borders or the boundaries of its land mass. Rather a nation is defined by people from diverse Cultural, Ethnic, Religious & Social backgrounds who have been unified by a noble cause and a set of values that form the basis for common unity (community) in understanding what is right & wrong, what is good & bad, what is acceptable & unacceptable. When people share common values, they become brothers & sisters regardless of where they are from.

When people share a common vision, they become focused on their unified future rather than their diversified past.

For more than a decade, Fela Durotoye has worked to inspire a generation to believe in the vision for a New Nigeria & to commit to a set of Values that unite Nigerians beyond their cultural diversities.

Fela has used his mastery of words to inspire action that has resulted in the transformation of the lives of people, organizations & nation states.

His mission is to build people into superachievers and responsible leaders, build corporate organizations into global market leaders and responsible corporate citizens as well as assist governments in developing blueprints and programs that create a desirable environment for their people to do great things.

FD is renowned for history making on the national and global stage. Over the past decade, Fela Durotoye has built a track record of National Transformation projects, many of which are so bold and audacious; near impossible tasks.

For instance, in December 2009, he championed the largest urban renewal project in Nigeria’s history known as MUSHIN MAKEOVER. Fela mobilized over 2,000 volunteers to paint 296 houses, 3 kilometers of road median and over 20 bus stops across 7 streets of the Mushin suburb of Lagos in one day and AT NO CHARGE to the owners and resident of the buildings.

The effort was seen as one of the largest community development project with no government funding but which was accomplished through individual donations and corporate sponsorship as well as the endorsement and physical involvement of many of the nation’s celebrities (Music stars and Nollywood actors), entrepreneurs, professionals, law-makers, students as well as the notorious ‘area boys’, all of who collaborated in an unprecedented way to bring about community transformation.

In the course of the Mushin Makeover project, over 100 unemployed youths were trained by Berger Paints PLC in ‘The Art & Technique of Painting’. Today, they have become vibrant painters and are able to earn a living as a result of the Mushin Makeover project.

On the 24th of November 2012, FD organized the epoch making GEMSTONE GLOBAL READING FESTIVAL where over 12,000 students spread across 18 state capitals in Nigeria as well as in 9 countries across Africa, Europe and the USA all read out aloud in their various locations selected sections of Fela’s book (17 Secrets of High Flying Students) at the exact same moment in time (across several time zones).

This was the first-ever simultaneous global reading of a book – “17 Secrets of High Flying Students” in 17 cities in Nigeria and 17 countries across the world at the same moment in time (via live streaming). The reading was done simultaneously, taking into account, the different time zones of each reading centre.

Also in  November 2012, Fela broke the world record for “autographing the largest number of books by one author” when he autographed non-stop 10,000 copies of his book in one-seating over a period of 8 hours and 43 minutes.

In 2014, the Deliver The Future Project was founded when FD embarked on a leadership and personal transformation tour of tertiary institutions such as University of Ibadan, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Benson Idahosa University etc.

The aim of the DTF tour is to leave its trail in academic excellence by encouraging the academic and non-academic staff of schools to improve the standard of communication and process of knowledge transfer to create a more conducive learning environment in tertiary institutions.

Perhaps Fela’s most significant contribution to Nation Building is the VALUE SYSTEM which he developed and is currently being endorsed and actively promoted by over 30,000 Nigerians across all gender, tribe, social class or religious affirmation. The 10 Values have now been articulated into a PERSONAL CREED and is being adopted by individuals, organizations, professional associations (such as Association of Private Educators of Nigeria, the Nigerian Institute of Mechanical Engineers and the Mortgage Bankers Association of Nigeria), and more recently government agencies and parastatals.

In 2014, the government of Anambra state formally endorsed & adopted the 10 Values for the citizens and civil service of the state. Also in November 2014, the government of Lagos state trained 500 of its top civil servants across all ministries & agencies on the 10 Values.

The VALUES INFUSION project is the largest non-governmental effort at reorienting the citizens of a nation and integrating a value system into our nation’s consciousness in recent times.

Fela has won several national and international awards for his leadership development and nation building activities including the prestigious Nigerian Achievers Award in 2009. In recognition of his contributions to the field of Human Resource Consulting, he was honoured with the “Excellence in Human Resource Consulting Award” by NIPRO, a body of Nigerian Professionals based in the United Kingdom and the United States of America, at their global convention in Miami, Florida in December 2004.

Also in July 2005, he was awarded the most prestigious Award of Excellence, by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPMN), in recognition of his excellence and professionalism in extending knowledge frontiers in Human Resource Management.

Others awards include, Nigerian Achievers Award Institute (NAAI), Fly Network Africa Integrity Award, City People Award and Role Model Award by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).

In 2006, he received the Heart of Africa Award by the Federal Ministry of Information and Communication in recognition of his efforts towards building a new Nigeria.

In 2011, Fela Durotoye was recognized by the Universal Peace Federation and the Youth Federation for World Peace as a United Nations Young Ambassador For Peace.

In 2017, Fela received an Honorary Award from The African Young Entrepreneurs network in recognition of his efforts towards advancing youth enterprise and nation building in Africa and particularly in Nigeria.

Purpose. Passion. Mission. Values

Fela Durotoye Loves Nigeria. He believes in a New Nigeria. And his undying passion for Nigeria has over the years earned him the pet name Mr. Nigeria.

Sometimes, it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom

– Nelson Mandela –

Fela believes that our generation has been chosen for greatness. A great generation delivers a better nation to his children than the one that it inherited from its parents.

According to Fela Durotoye, “No generation would be judged by what it inherited from its parents, but every generation will be held to account for the nation it bequeaths to the next generation. Regardless of what state Nigeria is in today, providence calls upon our generation to build a New Nigeria that we would be proud to deliver to our children and they would be grateful to inherit from us.”

Nations are like houses, and just as houses are built by plumbers, carpenters, mason, painters etc., nations also must be built by Nation Builders who do four things that can be summarized as ABCD…Accept, Believe, Commit, and Deliver.

  • Accept responsibility: For too long, we have abdicated the responsibility of nation building to others in government, foreign donors and investors, and even the United Nations. We have passed on the duty of making Nigeria great to the hands of a few people who have shown to us over and over again that their interests lie in their own progress and not that of the nation or its people. It is therefore time to change that method. Albert Einstein once said that it is foolishness to do the same things the same way and expect a different result. If things must change, then we must be the ones to change it.  The New Nigeria must be built by us. We must no longer neglect the responsibility of building our nation. Indeed, we must accept the responsibility to build the walls of our beloved Nigeria again.
  • Believe in its Potential & Possibilities: For the rest of the world, seeing is believing, but for us believers, we believe with our hearts and then we see with our eyes. We must believe in the potential greatness of our nation and our generation’s capacity to birth that greatness.
  • Commit to making it happen: We must be ready to commit our time, energy, resources and God-given talents to the manifestation of God’s will for Nigeria. Commitment always requires sacrifice. Therefore we must be willing to give all that it takes to the birth of this new Nigeria. Beyond this, we must be willing to commit our hearts to a set of VALUES that will guide our thoughts, decisions, words and actions. We must commit to live a lifestyle of leadership and excellence and to do all within our power to transform Nigeria into the most desirable nation to live in.
  • Deliver the future: The future is not a time zone yet to come. The future is not a date on the calendar yet to be revealed. The future is everything we can be as a people but have not yet become. The future is everything we can do but have not yet done. The future is everything we can have but have not yet possessed. The future of Nigeria is not in 2025. The future of Nigeria is in us and we must deliver the future of our great Nigeria by Wednesday December 31st, 2025.

Fela’s purpose is to raise a generation of Nation Builders who would be committed to building Nigeria into a most desirable Nation to live in.

Through the platform of his Leadership Network, Fela mentors tens of thousands of aspiring, emerging, renowned leaders in business, politics, religion & education.

Leaders on the Fela Durotoye Leadership Network (FDLN) are committed to the New Nigeria Vision 2025 & to a personal creed of the ten (10) lifestyle statements namely:

  1. MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT on everyone we meet and everywhere we go.
  2. BE A SOLUTION PROVIDER and not a part of the problem to be solved.
  3. BE A ROLE MODEL worthy of emulation.
  4. BE OUR BEST IN ALL WE DO, particularly the things we are naturally good at.
  5. DO THE RIGHT THING AT ALL TIMES regardless of who is doing the wrong thing.
  6. VALUE TIME and make the best use of it.
  7. CARE AND SHOW RESPECT to all through our words and actions.
  8. CONSCIOUSLY BUILD A GREAT LEGACY starting now, today and everyday.

FD’s mission is to teach them how to live a lifestyle of Leadership & Excellence for Accelerated Development (L.E.A.D) in their personal & professional life as they together build Nigeria into a most desirable nation to live in.
